32-bit vs 64-bit: Which to Choose?

    Choose 32-bit if:

    • You use older third-party add-ins
    • Your system has less than 4 GB RAM
    • You need maximum compatibility with legacy files

    Choose 64-bit if:

    • You work with very large Excel files (>2 GB)
    • Your system has 8 GB+ RAM
    • You use PowerPivot, Power View, or 3D models

Note: Microsoft recommends the 32-bit version for most users due to better add-in compatibility.

    Internet Requirements

    Internet connection is required for:

    • Downloading and installing Office 2016
    • Product activation (initial and periodic)
    • Downloading security updates
    • Accessing files on OneDrive or SharePoint

Once installed and activated, Office 2016 works offline for most tasks. Periodic reconnection is required to validate the license.
